I’ve been thinking about webrings for a while now. In the late nineties I was part of a webring of Australian bloggers. One of them was a young married Christian man from Sydney, another was I think, a woman who did knitting from South Australia. We chatted on IRC and had a webring. You could click on it and see what people were up to, this was before I think RSS feeds of blogs.
I remember our quirky navigation, our abuse of the <blink> tag and most of all, our sense of community. There used to be software that would manage webrings for you, sadly these commercial outfits have long since gone. Webrings still exist but they are surprisingly hand coded and bespoke objects. I am tempted to try and make something to duplicate that functionality. On the upside, there are modern frameworks that could certainly help on that front, on the downside, I’m not really a coder, and what little coding I did do, was 20 years ago. However, I remain tempted. Aside from the website to manage the rings, I think I would like to have a WordPress plugin to auto-magically pull the required data to insert that code into someone’s website. Anyone with coding expertise want to help me out?
